What is SILP?
The Supervised Independent
Living Program (SILP) offers an opportunity for young adults ages 18-21 who are
in school or are employed, to live in their own apartment under the guidance and
supervision of the Coalition for Hispanic Family Services.
Each two or three bedroom
apartment accommodates two or three young adults of the same sex. While the
young people live on their own, they are visited in the apartment once a week by
a social worker, to insure that they are following the rules of the program as
well as the landlord/lease and are caring for the apartment in a responsible
manner. The social worker also provides 24-hour cell phone coverage in case of
any emergencies.
After 18 to 24 months and
successful completion of the program, the young people graduate from the program
and move out of the apartment into their own place. Young people who are not
able to meet the program requirements are asked to leave the program.
