Arts & Literacy After School & Summer Program

The Arts and Literacy After School and Summer Program addresses the educational needs of Bushwick children by providing them with opportunities to create, think, communicate, and problem solve. Program activities build literacy in the widest sense of the word through creative writing, the visual arts, theater, photography, video, creative movement and dance, music, martial arts, media literacy, gardening, fashion design, comic book design, sports and Yoga. The interdisciplinary curriculum builds upon the children's interests and strengths, using the same effective, holistic, multicultural approach which is the hallmark of all of the Coalition's programs. The program also offers art therapy, monthly Family Arts Nights with family literacy workshops, support for families, family educational trips, apprenticeships for neighborhood high school students, and comprehensive services through the agency's other programs. The elementary program operates out of Public Schools 116, 377 and 123 in Bushwick Brooklyn and out of Public School 92 in Corona, Queens and Public School Q377 in Elmhurst. The middle school program operates out of Juan Morel Campos Secondary School in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Intermediate School 230 in Jackson Heights, Queens, Intermediate School 227 the Louis Armstrong Middle School in Flushing Queens, Public School 127 Aerospace Science Magnet in East Elmhurst, Queens, and The Emerson School in Jamaica, Queens.
